Premana, the highest town in the Valsassina, is not only the largest producer of scissors in the world. In addition to the iron craft, it boasts a particular tradition of multivocal singing called tiir. It is a shouted vocal style that is potent, slow and sustained in the acute range, to the verge of screaming. On three days each year this song explodes throughout the streets of the town: on the day of the Past (8 August, on the occasion of the ritual meal at the end of the pasturing season, and on the religious holidays of Corpus Domini (6 June) and Three Kings (5 January), the eve of the Epiphany when the Three Kings guide the procession.
